Description Well, I honestly thought that this day would never come; advertising one of my favourite cars.
This 1981 124 Spider has been in our family since 2001, when our father bought it in quite a sorry state. He started the ground-up restoration and we chipped in to help him complete it this summer. It"s an absolute joy to own, but sadly we just don"t have the time to use it properly. We"ve done fewer than 500 miles in it and been to only one show last year (which was Cars on the Close in Norwich, and we organised that ourselves!). It really deserves to be enjoyed fully, rather than just tucked away and allowed out once or twice a year.
It started out as a very rare Spider Turbo built by Legend Industries under license by Fiat. No one seems to know the exact number of how many were actually sold in their run from 1981 to 1983, but most suggest it was only ever around 700. A previous owner (a BBC Radio Norfolk celebrity - but not Alan Partridge, alas!) had this convoluted induction system removed as, like most early turbocharging experiments, it proved less than reliable. In original guise this car would have developed 122bhp, so the standard 80bhp injection engine seemed a bit of a backwards step to us. Replacing the turbo system and its unique ancillaries would be nigh on impossible, so instead we sympathetically fettled and meticulously rebuilt the naturally aspirated 2.0 Lampredi twin-cam engine to make sure no performance was lost. Modifications include a cylinder head from a 132 with enlarged valves, the fuel injection system was reverted back to carburettors, all US emission restrictions have been removed, a lightened flywheel was fitted and much, much more. We"d estimate it is now running approximately 130bhp which, when you consider the brand new 124 Spider in a Fiat dealership only has 138bhp, isn"t bad at all for a 35-year-old classic!
It drives superbly. Starts on the button, is more than lively enough to keep up with modern pace and is remarkably easy to drive. It has covered just 35k miles and flew straight through the MoT in July without a single advisory (mind you, after the restoration it"s been through I"d have been disappointed if it hadn"t!). It was fully stripped down and refinished in the period light blue (much more appealing than the original drab brown), treated to a brand new tan hood, brand new carpets, new clutch, rebuilt suspension...basically whatever it wanted, it got and nothing but genuine Fiat parts have been used. We have lots of photos of the various stages in this process. Thousands of pounds have been spent on it, heaven knows how many man-hours - but as soon as we finally got to drive it again, there was no doubt that it was all worth it.
This is a very special car indeed, and deserves to be used accordingly.

About italicar
We have been selling used vehicles since 2007, and specialising exclusively in Italian marques since 2012. Over this time, we have sold numerous Fiats, Alfa Romeos and Lancias to happy customers all over the UK, with some even ending up as far afield as France, Spain and Denmark. We sell only the cars we are truly passionate about and ensure each one is in a condition we, and hopefully our customers, can be genuinely proud of.
We are located in Norwich (NR6 6RH), just off the main ring road. Turn off between Thurlow Nunn Vauxhall and NMG Suzuki, opposite Mr Clutch and Topp"s Tiles onto Beech Drive. Follow this to the top and then turn left into Renson Close, and we"re in Unit 7. Home to no fewer than four Italian car specialists this really is Norfolk"s very own Little Italy!
All of our cars can be viewed in our dry, well-lit unit in all weathers and at any time. Not all of our cars are always stored here though, so if you do wish to come and view any please contact us first to make an appointment.
