1987 Lotus EXCEL 2.2Ltr SE RED (Ideal renovation project)
This car is in need of some TLC and will need a respray and work to get it back to its original condition and Mot.
The engine has been re-built twice the first time at 124500 miles in Oct 05 and again at 133000 miles after a catastrophic failure in May 07. The engine has barely been run in with less than 100 miles done. The car has been sat for the last 9yrs so the engine would benefit from a good inspection it does start but is lumpy the cambelt would definitely need replacing and valve stem seals may also need replacing because of the fact that it has been stood for all this time. The rebuilds were carried out by Ultimate Performance and Northampton Motorsport, the work carried out is fully documented for the first rebuild but not for the second and included :-
Gas flowed head, Skimmed, oil restricter fitted, new valves and springs, Accralite pistons + liners (11:1 CR), fly wheel re-faced, all bearings, shells, etc replacedas required, reconditioned water pump, re-jetted carbs, new K& air filters, new clutch pressure, friction plate bearings, refurbished radiator, cambelt and tensioner , belts and much more. Although a new HC reconditioned head and new mahle pistons and liners were used in the second rebuild.
The interior is in good order being black leather and was reupholstered and light grey carpets fitted by the previous owner around 98/99.
The exterior body is in need of a full respray as the paint work has blown (it had a top half respray in 2002) The alloys are 14 Speedlines as fitted by Lotus, these are in reasonable condition for age but would benefit a full renovation or replaced with 15 wheels which were fitted as standard on later models.
A full stainless steel exhaust is fitted and a new manifold was fitted in 03.
A bit of history about the car - It seems that Lotus made a small batch of Excels in 86/87 which were badged SE were in fact made up of SE bodies and the LC engine, hence the fitting of the 14 Speedline alloys. Lotus must of had alot of LC parts that needed using up ! This must of been the case as all the numbers match exactly ie engine and chassis numbers.
The car has been SORN"ed since Sep 2007 and I have all the Mot certs up to Nov 07 and service stamped handbook to 50000 miles.
