******PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY BEFORE BIDDING******
First of all I"ll make things very clear that this is a drivers car, regardless of the semi-auto tiptronic option (manual selection up, electronically down), the car has to be driven as a manual does, but with the absence of a clutch. As Smart owners will know these early models do not offer much in the way of comfort or relaxed driving. The drive is spirited and engaging, best suited to drivers with a year or two under their belt, or ....... experienced Smart owners. If you are a parent or first time buyer looking for a lazy automatic this is NOT the car for you. However, it can be a fun and economic vehicle.
Secondly, these have become a grey area in licensing laws. The DVLA informed me that any vehicle without a clutch is able to be used as an automatic, driving instructors have said something slightly different in that regardless of clutch, if manual selection is required, it is considered a manual..... please make sure you are clear on this, but not an issue with a manual licence.
The car itself has proven to be massively reliable. Originally purchased for my wife to commute to and from work, then the same for myself for the last year to and from the station. We have always tried to maintain regular servicing (oil changes must be done without fail on these) my wife also valets the car at least once a week, we are both quite particular of a cars presentation. We were not only surprised by the interior space but the spitely nature of this car, yes you have to work the "box but it really does scoot along.
I have conducted servicing myself, last month changing all six plugs (3 on top 3 below) which required the rear bumper to be removed along with other components, not a nice job, but it"s out of the way.
There are things that need addressing, there is a startermotor fault which affects start up when hot. However, left 20 mins to cool down or first time morning starts are never an issue. ABS could do with looking at, possibly just realtor rings? External passenger door handle needs fixing, the plastic body panels are cracked in places, the stereo needs a permanent live, a few leaks when washed and it could do with a tune as it"s running a bit rich. Aside from this, it still drives, stops, ticks over smoothly and pulls like a champion! It"s had an aftermarket central looking system/immobiliser. From memory, electrics are all ok. A few marks on the interior, newish battery and 4x tyres. There are a fair few MOTs and bits and bobs history wise. We"ve just removed my wife"s private plate and luckily, the car has been reassigned it"s original registration. The vehicle is currently on a SORN. As it stands, the car is not far from an MOT.
I"ve been honest as I can, it"s a quirky car that needs consideration before purchase. That said I will happily show you around before the bidding ends. The vehicle is on a SORN and therefore cannot be driven on a public road unless you have committed to purchase , MOT and road tax, so please do not expect a test drive until then.
