Porsche loyalists and car enthusiasts everywhere went into a state of stunned disbelief after the CAYENNE was unveiled in September 2002 at the Paris auto show. And when thisPorsche-badged, slightly altered Volkswagen Touareg began appearing at upscale shopping malls in 2003, they were appalled.
Porsche officials stressed that offering the company"s first sport-utility vehicle was motivated purely by the need for profits, which would ensure Porsche"s independence.
My car has the  £2070 forPorsche Communication Management (PCM), which turns out to be Porsche-speak for a navigation system; £760 for heated seats; £430 for a trailer hitch; £395 for the metallic paint. Also has heated steering wheel which is a nice touch.
And long hauls were where it drew the most praise: You cannot beat the CAYENNE for road-trip comfort, Good passing performance, and the engine makes very seductive noises, were some of the commets passed. Also praised were its 400-plus-mile fuel range, comfortable seats, sporty but very pleasant ride, direct steering feel, and crisp chassis responses.
And there"s no question that adding an SUV to its lineup has done nice things for Porsche. At a time when the company"s car sales were dropping, overall sales jumped 33 percent in 2003 and by another 11 percent in 2004, due to the 31,038 CAYENNEs sold during those two years. (Not to mention Porsche had enough cash in its pocket to cough up roughly $4 billion to purchase 20 percent of Volkswagen.)
Think of it this way: Since theCAYENNE went on sale, Porsche has introduced at least 3 new models, the Carrera GT and the Cayman; has redesigned the 911 and the Boxster; and has a saloon, the Panamera. So how could Porsche"s decision to build a big SUV be a bad thing for enthusiasts when the profits it has generated will pay for Porsche sports cars of the future?
So why not aPorsche sport-utility. If revered automakers such as BMW and Audi can make an upscale sport-ute, why not Porsche?
The beautifully crafted all-wheel-drive CAYENNE is named for a spicy red pepper said to be known throughout the world. Although the name still is curious, it"s less awkward than that of giant Volkswagen"s new Touareg sport-ute.
Jointly Developed with Volkswagen
In fact, the CAYENNE was jointly developed with the Touareg to hold costs down—at least up to a point. The CAYENNE is sportier, costlier and faster than the above-average Touareg—especially in V8 form.
However, the CAYENNE does look better in person as well as in photographs. It has a muscular stance and aerodynamic contours.
Posh Interior
Many CAYENNE owners who aren"t crazy about its styling likely will forget its appearance when they enter this new Porsche"s luxurious, leather-covered interior, which is filled with comfort and convenience features. High quality materials are used, and there isn"t a stick out of place. The front bucket seats are very supportive during sporty driving.
Also on the plus side, the outside power mirrors are large and fold flat against front side glass for driving in tight off-road situations—or for protecting the mirrors in crowded parking lots. Replacing one of those banged-up mirrors is no cheap fix.
Desirable Obstacle Detection System
My CAYENNE has the front-rear obstacle detection system which is great because high front fenders obstruct visibility, as does a narrow back window. The system was a cost option when new and cost £700 extra on the list price.   Two thick, nicely styled grab handles flank the shift lever and help getting in and out of the moderately high CAYENNE, which has easily grasped large outside door handles. However, all controls aren"t easy to figure out at a glance, so CAYENNE buyers should spend some time with the owner"s manual.
Roomy
There"s good room for four tall adults. Five such persons can fit for most t trips,  A large tailgate with a low opening allows easy access to the spacious cargo area, which can be made roomier by flipping the rear seat forward. However, as with the Touareg, moving the back seat bottom forward calls for pulling a strap—and then yanking up the front of the seat bottom—before pulling it forward.
Both versions of the car are hooked to a responsive 6-speed automatic transmission, which can be shifted manually with the console shifter or steering-wheel thumb switches. Fuel economy is about what one might expect from a powerful sport-utility that weighs from 4,949: an estimated 25 mpg in the city and 29 on the Motorway for my version.
Good Off-Road Abilities
The CAYENNE has formidable off-road abilities, which may be surprising because it"s doubtful that many CAYENNE owners will engage in rough off-road driving with their shiny, expensive vehicle. Porsche figures that less than 5 percent will do such driving.  On the other hand, Porsche said it didn"t want to make a sport-utility vehicle that performed admirably on the road but was outdone by competitors during off-road use.   Sophisticated anti-skid and traction-control systems help give theCAYENNE excellent on-road abilities. Steering is quick, with decent road feel, and the turning circle is fairly tight.
Among safety features are front side air bags and curtain air bags for head protection of front and rear occupants.  Some CAYENNE drivers have gotten carried away and proclaimed that it"s just like a sports car. No way. Not something this big, high and heavy. However, the CAYENNE does set some new standards for high-performance sport-utility vehicles.
Only negative is it has the odd mark consummate with age and miles but nothing that detracts from the cars overall stunning condition & that really is it.
IN SUMMARY THIS IS A STUNNING MODERN 4X4 WITH ALL THE KIT YOU COULD WISH FOR, IT IS IN SUPER CONDITION, IT COMES WITH THE DESIRABLE V6 ENGINE AND SUPER SMOOTH AUTOMATIC GEARBOX  SO SURELY THE ONE TO HAVE ESPECIALLY IN LAPIS BLUE PEARL WITH GORGEOUS SAHARA LEATHER IT LOOKS FANTASTIC, IT DRIVES FAULTLESS AND IS IN SUPERB CONDITION, IF YOU LET THIS CAR GO WHEN YOUR SERIOUS ABOUT ONE YOU"D HAVE TO BE A FOOL AS THEY GENERALLY DON"T COME UP LIKE THIS ON EBAY, SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY COMMAND A PREMIUM ON AUTOTRADER SITES AND THE LIKE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION WITH THIS MILEAGE AND HISTORY.
