Ssangyong REXTON 2.7 XDI, 57 2007
I was using this daily and then encountered a problem with it starting.
first it was taking a few seconds then 10secs, then 20secs, then not at all.
it will only start with a tiny shot (and I mean tiny!) of ether (easy start/brake cleaner), I don"t want to do this too much because diesel engines can become dependant on it.
Having spent over £1200 trying to rectify this but I am admitting defeat.
I have receipts to prove every purchase.
People ask why I"ve spent so much, but it was a snowball effect. It looked like one problem, fixed that one then it pointed to something else etc until I can"t do anymore to work it out.
(plus I didn"t like to be beaten).
The worst thing is when it runs its purrs and pulls like a train.
It runs faultlessly and smooth.
Anyway, to begin with I thought it was the injectors.
2 were found to be iffy and changed. They were all then pressure tested and leakback tested, so all were good.
they were refitted with brand new copper washers.
Then I thought glowplugs, but being summer they wont be needed anyway. I have the manufactrers workshop manual and it says they wont work until 2 deg C.
One glowplug was faulty so replaced that. the others were fine.
I then changed the glow plug relay (just in case).
Both the turbo and EGR solenoids were not working properly so they were rebuilt and moved to the top rear of the engine away from the heat and dirt.
Then the engine temp sensor was next. it turned out to be faulty but still within the working margins. This was changed for a brand new dealer part anyway.
By now its had had its second fuel filter.
Then I realised the fuel tank was getting warm whilst running, so I changed out the fuel temp sensor and inlet metering valve on the fuel pump. again these were dealer parts.
I also changed the fuel pressure switch while I was at it along with a dealer supplied fuel filter.
I then drained all the diesel til the tank was empty and clean and put fresh in before re priming and starting.
it has been compression tested also and all 5 cylinders are good so I don"t think its bad rings or valves.
And this is where I"m at now.
I"ve lost the will to live!
I have spent way too much money on top of the major servicing I did to her in March (listed below).
Just because it was bugging me as to what the problem was.
This might be an easy fix for someone as I"m obviously missing something.
The worst thing is that this 4x4 is such an honest sound car that has such low mileage on it.
if this doesn"t sell this week I will be breaking it for parts!

This is a low mileage 65k 5str 4x4
The engine and running gear is from Mercedes ML.
These are good strong reliable 4x4s.
There is an MOT until November 2015
It is no longer used and is currently on SORN
This has benefitted from a major service on the 20/03/15
I have just put a brand new battery on 26//6/15
It has had engine oil flush and then had new oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, new belt, thermostat,
Coolant, all transmission fluids have been changed also inc
Front and rear diffs, gearbox and transfer box.
While this was done the viscous fan was cleaned and oiled, all the rads were flushed or blown out and the vanes cleaned with compressed air.
I can give a copy of receipts to prove what"s been changed.
It has had new brake pads front and rear, disks are in good condition all round.
It has had new wiper blades, bulbs
I have kept all recent old parts for proof.
One of the freewheeling hubs were changed.
(I had to buy a complete unit for the free wheeling hub)
There are a few little age related marks but nothing that affects the vehicle
This is what it is, a very capable 4x4 with a towing capacity of 3.5t
It has selectable hi and low 4x4 and it works well.
It is equipped with climate control and rear heaters.
all tow bar electrics work as they should
It is priced to sell and would be a great 4x4 for someone.
