vehicle description:
If you are looking for luxury, German build quality motor, with superb handling, a powerful, refined engine… and at Ford Escort money, then the BMW (E39) 5 Series ticks all the boxes.
Here’s why…
The E39 5 Series was released in 1997 and quickly became an ever-present fixture within the Top 10 list of cars to own and drive.
In fact it was constantly regarded as “the best car in the World” and often quoted with… “if you can afford it, you’ll never want another car”…
And so, in 2009 I finally decided I wanted a BMW 5 Series.
I knew what I wanted…
A low mileage, low owner and the 520i SE model with all the luxury extras.
And eventually I found this 1997 BMW 520i SE Tiptronic Auto
In silver with full black leather interior.
At the time of purchase it was a 3 owner, full service history with 83,000 miles.
It has now done 133,780
Five years and two children later, it’s time to say goodbye to this wonderful car and enter the World of ‘People Carrier’.
So, what’s this BMW 5 Series got to offer…?
Throughout my 5 year ownership I continued to have it serviced every 12 months – depending on when the onboard computer tells me too – it currently has 5 green service lights showing, so next service is a long way off.
Here’s what I’ve had done to the car over the past years (I’ve got all invoice/paperwork for all jobs, and invoices for jobs carried out on the car before I took ownership):
14/9/09 – Replace hoses, replace thermostat housing gasket and replace boot locking solenoid
16/9/09 – Replace coolant hose
24/6/10 – Service Inspection 2 service
22/6/11 – Service Inspection 1 including replacement pads, brake disks, rear coil spring and anti roll bars
23/3/12 – New radiator
7/6/12 – New crankshaft position sensor, coolant thermostat housing
5/7/12 – Service Inspection 2
3/7/13 – Service inspection 1
27/8/13 – New water pump, drive belt and top hose
26/2/14 – New start motor
3/7/14 – Service Oil Inspection and renew both lower arm wishbones/arms/links (front axel)
Just a note, the engine is chain driven rather than belt driven, so no costly cam-belt replacement required.
In total I have receipts totalling over £3,500 – just to give you an idea that it has been very well looked after by myself.
I have all MOT certificates going back to 2001
Here is just some of what you’ll get with this BMW:
Smooth Automatic gearbox with the tiptronic option enabling you to change gear by simply moving the gear lever up or down
Full black leather interior
6 CD Auto changer
Average 33 MPG
Ice cold dual air-conditioning
On board computer
Alloy Wheels
Cruise control
4 x Electric windows
Remote Central locking
Multi-function steering wheel
Auto dim rear mirror
Flat six silky smooth engine
Full tool kit in the boot
1st aid kit under front passenger seat
Original Spare key
Plenty of tread on all four tyres
A new battery 2 years ago
Starts first time - every time
MOT till 4th July 2015
Tax till end of November 2014
BMW Black wallet pack – including instruction manual
Original BMW torch
And much more….
With it being a 17 year old car there are obviously a few scratches etc.. which I’ve tried to show in the photo’s.
There are small rust patches on both rear wheel arches – they always go on this model of car
There is also a slight leak of power steering fluid. I suspect it’s the hoses that need replacing and was something I was going to get fixed at the next service.
Nothing major, I just top up the power steering reservoir every 6 weeks or so with about half a cup full of fluid – I’ll give you the rest of the power steering fluid I have spare.
And the only other fault that I know is that the motion detector sensor within the car is faulty – so I just simply switch that off by pressing the lock button on the key twice.
The rest of the alarm system works perfectly.
And that’s about it – not bad for a 17 year old car.
I’ve tried to describe this car as accurately as possible.
With this being a well looked after, full service history model, this car will last another 10 years.
I’ve started the bidding at £200.00 with no reserve, so this lovely BMW will go to the highest bidder.
Best of luck.
