Clan Crusader RR004 Works Developed Rally Car/Hillclimb Car
Due to a change of direction my very special Clan Crusader is up for sale. The Clan Crusader was based on the Hillman Imp and uses Imp running gear and suspension. The original works rally Clan was LUP62J and was raced during the 1972 season by Andy Dawson for the Clan Company and is rightly regarded as the only true ex-works rally Clan. RR004 was originally built by Clan to be the improved replacement for this car and to be driven by Andy in the 1973 season. Andy Dawson left Clan before the start of the 1973 season and Clan decided not to replace him.. The car was sold to renowned scottish rally racer Donald Heggie and he rallied it for a period achieving some success. Including winning it’s class on the 1973 Jim Clarke Memorial Rally. Later on the car was converted to it’s current hillclimb/sprint specification.
Due to having been intended as a works rally car it has a number of differences compared to other RR shells. As per other true RR shells it has a built in fibreglass roll cage and thicker floor to cope with forest rallies. However the top half of the shell is thinner than other RR shells, it has factory foam filled sills and we believe there are a number of detail differences in the construction of the shell. The shell has it’s original wide arches which are different to the normal wide arches fitted to most Clan’s.
A number of changes have been made to the car over time converting it from it’s original gravel specification to it’s current hillclimb specification. The one obvious change is that the original back end was chopped off and it now has a fibreglass skin and runs with a hanging engine. In this set-up the car is very light – estimated 400-450kg fully built. We still have the original back end for the car and it would not be too difficult to refit it, the back end is currently stored away from the car. The mould for the fibreglass skin is also included. The car still has it’s original reinforced wishbones and shocks. It also has the original spec front radiator. Additionally it has the original drum brakes. It now has a ducted air exit for the radiator and a small fuel tank.
The car has not been used for a number of years and will require restoration work to return it to either hillclimb or rally spec. It is currently sat on standard Imp wheels but a set of weller steels (8” wide front 10” wide rear) are included. During it’s hillclimb career it was run with an imp engine tipped over the ‘wrong’ way. The car will come with the hanging brackets to mount the engine both ways.
Overall the shell is in good condition although there is some bubbling on the roof that needs to be sorted. The plywood diaphragms are in good condition. This is an almost unique chance to own a very rare and potentially very competitive hillclimb/rally car.
Viewing welcome and recommended. We are in and available for most of the bank holiday weekend.
The car is located in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, GL3. Collection and cash payment within 14 days of auction end.
