Up for Auction is my old faithful VW GolfI"ve had this car for 8 and a half years and done 80k in it.I"ve serviced it every year and also done additional work such as a new clutch at 120k, new cambelt, rollers, tensioner and water pump at 138k.I normally only keep a car for 4-5 years but this one has been such a good car I"ve hung onto her. I would normally see 45-50 mpg normal driving but on a good long run, I could get 60- 65 mpg.
Sadly, all good things come to an end.
We decided to sell her and get something a bit newer and in disgust, the Golf threw a wobbler and a couple of bolts failed on the nearside drive shaft. Fortunately it was pulling out of a junction and not doing 60 mph at the time they gave up.  The result was a short sharp bang to the gearbox casing causing an inch long dent in the casing which was weeping oil. I have patched it up with chemical metal, replaced the drive shaft bolts and have driven it to work and back for the last two weeks with no sign of leaks or issues other than a minor click from the lower ball joint and (annoyingly) a blowing exhaust from the front flexi pipe which started up 2 weeks after the MOT.
The car had 4 new tyres at a cost of £200 before the MOT on the 7th of Oct and passed with no advisories, so you should get a couple of years motoring out her once the front pipe is sorted.She is due an oil on filter change but  to be honest I haven"t had the time to get it done so ill leave it to the new owner.The air con works extremely well, radio and cd player work fine and the interior is in good condition apart from the catch on the glove box broke.
If you"re after a cheap winter hack or cheap economical commuter then you wont go far wrong. The exhaust is a £50-60 for the part and if you"re mechanically minded, its simple enough to do.
