vehicle description:
Here is for sale my 1992 Defender, please read the whole
description below before bidding.
This is a genuine Land Rover Defender County Station Wagon
V8, which at the time of purchase had only done 76K miles. However the vehicle had been involved in an
accident prior to me purchasing it.
I originally rebuilt this vehicle about 8 years ago using a galvanised
chassis and when completed had a VIC test carried out and the vic certificate
and paperwork comes with the vehicle. It
is also clearly marked on the registration document that an identity check has
been carried out.
I have replaced the original engine with a low mileage 3.9EFI
serpentine engine from a 1996 Discover, this is a much better engine than the
earlier version. I did have the history
for the vehicle but unfortunately I can’t find it at the moment. I replaced the tappets, cam and push rods
along with the timing gear. I also replaced the thermostat and water pump just
to be sure. When fitting the new engine
I also fitted a later TDCI bonnet to allow the fitment of the air intake/filter.
I have also replaced the original cooling system with an armouredLand Rover radiator which has about 50% greater surface area, an X-eng
thermostatic control along with a main Kenlow fan and a smaller Pacet fan. I also fitted an oiler cooler with a
thermostatic control so as ensure the engines warms up as quickly as possible
but keeps cool when required.
The engine is fitted with a Mega Jolt lite ignition
therefore no more distributor or water problems. The megajolt is fully programmable and you
can download maps or just adjust it yourself.
The engine also has tubular manifold to replace the original cast
manifolds which are not great.
It has heavy duty Scorpion winch bumper along with Britpart
9500lb front winch with twin deep cycle batteries and split charge system. Both batteries are fitted in the passenger
footwell in a custom made battery tray along with two battery isolators (one
for the ignition etc and one for the winch) and there is wiring (with relays) for the fitment of spot lights. I have
not got round to fitting the spot lights but I intended to fit a 30” led spot light bar
flanked by 2 smaller led floods (there are 5 carling switches fitted in the
steel centre box all wired up) to the roll cage.
As you will see from the pictures it is not exactly
standard. When I rebuilt it I fitted a
late TD5 front axle (bigger disc brakes) and an XD style rear axle (2002 110
onwards). This axle has allowed me to fit a
ARB Diff locker and has the benefit of disc brakes. Both axles have diff guards fitted along with
a steering guard, adjustable heavy duty panhard rod and heavy duty drag link.
It has a 2” inch Scorpion Racing (now Extreme) lift, front
spring are progressive with both the front shock towers and rear shock mounts
having a 2” drop along with extended brake hoses and dislocation cones front
and rear. It has cranked trailing arms
and radius arms and to the front a heavy duty double cardon front
prop. This is a genuine Scorpion racing
item not a discovery unit which is so often used.
The tyres are very good condition BF Goodrich Mud Terrains
fitted to genuine Wolf Wheels. The wheels are army surplus and were only fitted
a few weeks back. The tyres have covered
about 5,000 miles and are in very good condition, the spare is unused.
Originally I fitted a Mantec raised air intake along with
axle and gearbox breathers. However as
you will see it has a new genuine Safety Devices bolt in roll cage fitted now which
meant I had to change to a more traditional raised air intake, however this is
an army surplus item which is stronger than any I have ever seen before. It also has rock and tree sliders fitted to
the chassis.
I fitted this style of cage as it is not so aggressive
looking and if there had been one where I could have run the front legs down
the inside I would have done but unfortunately there is just not enough space.
It has had the power steering pump and slave and master clutch
cylinders replaced, within the last year and lots of other things have been
done which I now can’t remember.
The interior is in good condition and the back seats are
from a TD5 110 in techno cloth and I have re-trimmed the front seats in the same
materials the headlining was also replaced at the same time. I also replaced the dash with a later style
TD5 dash which also has the ARB Compressor and Diff locker switches along with
the X-eng switch.
On the down side the bodywork is not as tidy as it might
be. It is not bad by any means and
considering the age of the vehicle it is very good however the pictures make it
look better than it is (I am just being honest). Also the powder
coating on the rock sliders has peeled and the paint on the rear cross member
has come off due to it be galvanised. I
never intended to make it too good looking as I did not want to worry about it when off
roading, but it is a case of personal taste and need.
The front doors are good and the near side 2nd
row door is ok but the off side needs welding and the skin replacing, a
replacement skin comes with the car. The rear door is in good condition but the
skin could do with replacing or repainting, the rear door card is in need of replacing.
The front wings are later style TD5 with later indicators
and also led headlights with polycarbonate lenses, massive improvement over the
original. I also replaced the rear
sliding windows with new ones as the old ones rattled and were not very
secure.
I am sure there are lots of other things which I have
forgotten both good and bad. I am more
than happy to take anyone for a test drive.
