vehicle description:
Hi and welcome to my auction for my
stunning series 1 Discovery.
This is a very special vehicle, you can
be certain you will not find another like it.
This is the ultimate weekend fun
vehicle, loads of space for carrying round tools and building
equipment or doing trips to the tip, and has a unique camper
conversion in the back which makes it ideal for fishermen, kayakers
or windsurfers etc. Carry all your equipment with ease, then spend
the night at your favourite spot in comfort, what could be better?
If you have been considering buying aLandrover for a weekender and are disappointed at what your money can
get you (if you have been looking at Defenders), then this represents
great value for money. You get the Landrover marque and all the off
road capability of a Defender, but it"s more comfortable and drives
considerably better......I have restored a few early Defenders and
can state that objectively!
Difficult to know where to start, but
here goes....
Started life as a 3 door 300tdi. I
purchased it as it had no sunroof, no rear doors and a manual box –
all plus points if you know Discoveries.
Rear seats were removed and rear
windows blanked off making for a huge load space, which has been
carpeted and nicely trimmed out.
Front seats were replaced with black
leather ones, and the headlining carefully re-covered - this looks
lovely and makes a nice change in a Discovery, they are usually a
sagging mess.
Camper conversion in the back has been
thoughtfully done. It has a single bunk which measures 1850 x 600
when made up ( I will include the self inflating mattress, it"s
really comfortable).
Underneath the bunk are 3 slide out
storage boxes providing useful space for clothing or camping
equipment.
Nice worktop, which houses a small
stainless steel sink, has running water, LED lighting and a mini
fridge, all powered from a separate leisure battery in the back. This
is charged via solar panels, and also via a split charge relay
system. There is a 12v socket and antenna in the back for powering a
small TV and phone/lap top chargers etc. The solar panel charge
controllers also have useful USB charging points. There is a curtain
in the back which drops down and provides privacy from the front cab
area when required at night, and a foil blind which blanks out the
tailgate window, holds into place on small rubber suckers. Nice and
cosy in the back at night, unobtrusive too so ideal for “stealth
camping”.
Mechanically the vehicle is in really
good order, it"s been much pampered in my ownership and has wanted
for nothing. Been regularly serviced with lots of oil and filter
changes, and has had any parts it needed promptly done. Over the last
12 months it"s had all new suspension, new battery, new clutch , new
water pump, and just this week I have fitted a reconditioned
alternator, new serpentine belt and tensioner. Starts on the button,
runs sweet as a nut and pulls like a train.
The vehicle has a really nice stance
and sits well on the road. The extended arches and 35mm negative
offset steel modular wheels work perfectly together – looks sweet.
It sits tall, I"m often asked if it"s
been lifted but it hasn"t, the tyres have a bigger radius than the
standard wheels which raises it up a little. Tyres are Insa Dakar
265/75/16s – they were new last year and have loads of tread – I
have an unused spare on a spare steel modular too.
I carry the spare wheel on the roof
rack if I go on a trip, it"s too heavy to mount on the rear door so
I mounted a jerry can there instead!
The original rear bumper has been
replaced with a one piece heavy duty solid steel one. There is no
towing ball currently fitted, but the bumper has 4 fixing points in
which are set out at the correct centres to take a Nato style tow
ball or hitch – just bolt it straight on.
I have carried out a couple of lighting
upgrades, there are some small eagle eye LED units which run off the
side light circuit on the front and rear of the roof rack, some angel
eye spotlights, and also a 72w LED light bar wired into main beam.
All been correctly wired via a relay.
With full beam on the road is lit up
for miles, it"s awesome!
Roof rack is great, it"s a commercial
grade Rhino roof rack that would have originally been on a van, but I
fabricated some brackets to modify it and it fits perfectly. It"s
really strong, and as a bonus it takes full sheets of plywood or
plasterboard – there is a roller on the back edge which helps
loading considerably.
If you are not carrying plywood it will
take your surfboards or kayaks just as well!
Would also be ideal to take a roof tent
if you wanted to take a partner with you on an extended trip.
Prior to my ownership this vehicle was
owned by a local MOT garage as their runaround – in the years that
they had it they carried out various welding works in the areas where
early Discoveries suffer , so before it came to me it had previously
had a replacement boot floor/sills/rear cross member and body mounts.
I have waxoiled it a couple of times since I"ve had it and at the
moment I think it"s in pretty decent shape underneath, certainly way
better than most.
Can"t think of much else to say other
than come and have a look if you are genuinely interested.
I have decided to list as a fixed price ad - I"ve put a price on it which I think is fair for the condition,
extras and uniqueness , but I"m happy to haggle to a point!
Before expressing an interest please be
realistic about what this is – it"s a 20 year old Landrover, and
owning it brings with it a heady mix of joy, and occasional
frustration. Your friends will envy it, your wife will hate it, but
when you are behind the wheel the world will generally seem like a
better place.
If you have only ever driven a Ford
Focus, then you are probably barking up the wrong tree.......
Only selling as it"s time for a new
project, I have held onto this one for much longer than I normally do
as it kind of got under my skin, but time for me to start something
new.
Any questions drop me a note.
Cheers,
Bodhi............
