Find out where we are Launched at the London Earls Court Motor Show in October 1962, the Lotus Elan was the replacement for the Lotus Elite. Imagine the stir the Elan created, here was a lightweight sportscar with four wheel disc brakes, four wheel independent suspension and a twin cam engine all designed by a renowned Formula 1 constructor. This was a time when disc brakes were still two years away for a Porsche, and Ferraris were still fitted with a live rear axle. It was the first Lotus road car to use a steel backbone chassis with a fibreglass body and at 726kg, the Elan embodied the Colin Chapman minimum weight design philosophy.
The first cars (Series 1) were delivered in May 1963 and were fitted with a 1500cc Lotus Twin Cam engine. The Twin Cam had a special DOHC head and the bottom end came from Ford pushrod engines of the era, popular in the Escorts and Cortinas. Within a few months Lotus increased the engine capacity to 1,600cc.
In 1964 the Series 2 was introduced with a full width wood veneer dash, lockable glovebox and clustered tail lamps. Then in late 1965 the Series 3 Fixed Head Coupe (FHC) was introduced followed in early 1966 by the Drop Head Coupe (DHC). More creature comforts were added, full window frames for improved weather sealing, electric windows and head restraints. By mid 1966 the S3 S/E (Special Equipment) was launched with a bit more horsepower and knock-on wheels.
1968 brought the introduction of the S4 with lower profile tyres, servo assisted brakes, flared wheel arches, new rocker switchgear and Stromberg carburettors replacing the Webers and in 1971 the most powerful Elan was launched as the Sprint.
The vehicle we are pleased to offer is a UK supplied S4 FHC Special Equipment model, registered as a demonstrator to Plough Motors Gloucester in October 1970.
Finished in LO2 French Blue with black vinyl bucket seats, our car has a fully documented history from new and retains its original service voucher book and early service and repair invoices. There are records of all of the cars owners with copies of all registration documents and 31 old MOT’s going back to 1976, another nice touch is a collection of 27 tax discs going back to the 1980’s. The A4 box file is rammed full of history confirming the cars mileage of 149,000 to be correct. Another worthy note is that this car was well used in the early years with 120,000 of those miles covered in the first 15 years – a decent average even by todays standards!
Since 1985, the car has had limited use covering less than 30,000 miles to date, these miles I am sure, according to the history file, were more ‘enthusiast’ miles and the car in 1988 had a major engine rebuild with a rebore, new oversize pistons, new valves and valve guides along with other necessary items for a reliable future. There was also a full glass out photographic body restoration carried out in the early 2000’s of which I have a CD to pass on to the next keeper – the work was obviously carried out to a very high standard as it still presents itself very well inside and out with only limited patina evident to remind you this car is now approaching 47 years old.
We are currently carrying out light re commissioning due to a short term in dry storage but we welcome appointments to inspect at any time.
