vehicle description:
RELISTED - Many thanks to the huge number of watchers. Unfortunately, I listed this just a day or 2 before lock-down! I appreciate people cannot get out to see cars at the moment but i have relisted for 4 weeks in the hope that lock down is lifted within that time period. My number is 07756 764778 (Phil) if anyone would like to have a chat about the car. Thanks again for looking, and fingers crossed that there is still sunshine left to enjoy open-top motoring once we are allowed out.
Original advert:
I bought this lovely little Lotus in November, expecting to keep her for years, but recent events mean I need to sell her now.
I had a new MoT in January with a pass, noting only a small oil leak. I think this is from the Cam angle sensor area or the cam cover gasket.
Only 3 previous owners.
She has just has a precautionary new head gasket and rebuilt turbo - When I bought her she had a suspected head gasket failure. In fact it was a one way valve in the breather system pressurising the crankcase and pushing oil out via the turbo. I found that only after having had a new head gasket fitted and also having the Turbo fully refurbished by CR Turbos (Universal Turbos) in Fordingbridge. I also had a new cam belt put on.
I have replaced the Hall effect sensor, Idle air control valve and manifold pressure sensor, ignition leads, coils, plugs etc so that she runs very evenly.
The engine was serviced at the same time and changed the thermostat. She drives very nicely.
The service history shows a previous replacement gearbox meaning that the drivetrain should be pretty bulletproof (although it is a Lotus built in 1992!).
The hood is good, but the seals are average to poor and leak a little. However, she was stored inside by the previous owner and I’ve looked at the foot wells/cills and they were both solid. I sprayed them with Dinitrol to protect them.
I have replaced all the circuit boards on the back of the instruments as they had shorted out previously.
I have had the upper oil cooler hose remade as it was weeping( known weakness).
The rubbers for the door/glass interface have been replaced.
It has 4 Continental tyres in good condition with lots of tread.
The interior is actually really nice condition with part leather. The cloth is fine and the leather could do with a bit of recolouring on the drivers bolster but is pretty great for age. Carpets and mats are good.
The bad points I have identified are:
- the linkage behind the heater dial is disconnected and needs to be clipped back in place. until then, you cannot turn the heating to cold (but you can turn the fan off).
- the passenger headlight pod is misbehaving. I tried a replacement headlamp controller and it didn’t fix it (good news as they are expensive!). It occurred after the bulbs were changed, so I think it is a bad earth. The lights are set to the upright position for now.
- there is a rattle in the rear suspension. I’ve replaced the AFB joints and suspect a damper is rattling.
- the front bumper has a couple of cracks that need repair and there is an old repair near the fuel filler. The repair is good, but the paint lacquer has faded. That said, the overall look of the car is fairly good with a few cosmetics to maker her really good.
- the radiator fans work but squeal as they don’t get a lot of use.
- when the rain falls heavily or from the wrong direction, the hood leaks when standing (seems ok when moving!) so a hood rain cover is included in the sale.
I hope this gives you a good feel for her. Subject to quarantine etc, you are welcome to come and see the car in the flesh and test drive her.
Realistically priced - a nice car with lots of the hard work done and that can be used every day, but with scope for some detailing to make really nice. Low previous owners, a new MOT, new cam belt, new head gasket, refurbished turbo, recent service and a decent amount of service history.
