vehicle description:
What I really want to say is that this 3200GT isn’t for sale. Fresh from the garage where she got her annual service she also got a brand new wishbone. Didn’t see that coming, but was we know, these buggers are full of surprises (and British roads are full of potholes!) So the Maserati should be happy for another year with me (the radiator is new, too), but the truth is, the 3200GT is probably just not the car for me. I tried to live with her for one year and the relationship had been difficult. I still like the boomerang lights though and those sinuous curves, and I like the fact that drivers of newer and much more expensive Maseratis do greet me (and the guy with the Ferrari California, too). I do like the sound when she’s idling.
I still think she sounds like a vacuum cleaner above 3000 rpm (that’s the turbos!).
Fact is, I simply do not enjoy her as much as I excepted, which is partly because of the headaches, but also because we two don"t match. Which may be because I bought her at the wrong moment in my life, but that"s another story. Did I mention ‘headaches’? Okay, here’s the point where I have to be honest: I’ve done roughly 4000 miles in this year and at least for 3000 of these the ‘check engine’ light was on. The Maserati has now a new throttle potentiometer, the throttle body re-calibrated and parts of the wiring loom have been replaced. My mechanic thinks the car hates him, I resolved to not take it personally. The error codes suggest that there is some communication issue between the electronic components. The car drives ‘reliably’, but revs cap at 3000rpm and at least 300 horses are hiding somewhere where I can’t find them. Mind you, there are days without that warning light, too.
I was thinking I might still hold on to her. While she does, like any other self-respecting supercar, create a fair amount of costs, I am convinced that she will increase in value over the coming years. But maybe it"s better she will find an owner that will love her more (and have better access to a good garage). Of course, if I’d sell her now and I will look at how much those Maserati 3200GT will appreciate in a year or two already I will probably either curse or cry or both.
So here"s the bottom line.. she’s done roughly 61k miles, she’s automatic and it"s virtually rust free. She does come with a full service history and with the gremlins mentioned (Italian electrics... maybe it"s an easy fix, but I don"t have the specialists nearby who would manage to solve it and I simply have other hobbies rather than checking miles of cables). Additionally, one must not forget that she’s 16 years old: You can’t expect having all the fun with this curvaceous Italian lady and not spoil her rotten occasionally, can you? She’s not a Ford Focus and she doesn’t run on fairy-dust either. I know that some of the rubber hoses under the bonnet need replacing and it might not be a bad thing to get her a set of new brake disks for Christmas either.
And there you go. I really don’t want to sell her but I’ve decided to put her on eBay for £11000 (that’s non negotiable, by the way). You might call that a rather messed up relationship… but I totally blame her!
