Originally registered in August 1997, this very tidy UK Mk1 Mazda MX-5 1.8i has covered just 56,341 miles over its near 20 years. It is not only evident from the condition, but also from the service history that this car has been treasured by its previous owners. The original service book is present with the car, along with all original manuals, and contains details of service history and a cambelt replacement.
The MX-5 debuted in 1989 as Mazda’s all new front-engined, rear-wheel-drive roadster. Mazda’s ambition with the MX-5 was to recreate the classic British sports car, but with modern day safety and reliability. To achieve this Mazda designers studied and mimicked cars such as the Triumph Spitfire, Austin-Healey and, in particular, the Lotus Elan.
Keeping in mind this car is nearly 20 years old, there are a small number of minor age related marks; however, as is clear from the photographs, it is in really great condition. The car also benefits from a factory rear spoiler, Mazda 7-spoke alloy wheels and there are no corrosion concerns. The British Racing Green paintwork is very good and shines beautifully. Turning to the interior of the car, the seats are trimmed in grey leather and are in great condition, both carpets and MX-5 floor mats are good, and the dashboard / controls show no signs of wear. The only noteworthy point regarding the condition of the interior is a small bit of wear to the driver’s doorcard, where the window winder has caught the beading. The hood, which is mohair and has a heated, glass rear screen, is in fantastic condition and seals without any leaks.
Mechanically, this low mileage MX-5 is great. The 1.8i, 133BHP engine starts at a touch of the key and runs really well. The gearbox and clutch operate without fault and the car is great fun to drive. All the electrics function exactly as they should.
