vehicle description:

Welcome to the auction of my 91 year old father"s Mitsubishi Sigma Estate. Regrettably, he is parting with it after 12 years ownership. It has been garaged all that time, save the last 12 months when I have been using it occasionally. It has done a modest 111,500 miles.
Built in Mitsubishi"s plant in Adelaide, Australia, 415 Sigma Estates were imported and sold into the UK market by Mitsubishi. "Howmanyleft" shows that only 13 are currently on the road as at Dec 2014, with 29 on a SORN. You are therefore looking at a great example of one of the last of its type.
If you know nothing of these cars, you may wish to take a look at the Top Gear road test by Quentin Willson ("Mitsubishi Sigma Estate" on You tube). It takes 40 seconds or so before the film appears - be patient -it provides a good overview of this vehicle when new. This one is of course almost 21 years old now, and yet it is solid and has just gone straight through another MOT (now to May 2016). It has a number of quirks and blemishes, as you"d expect for a car of this age, but I would drive it to the South of France tomorrow with no concerns.
Its silver-grey with standard Sigma Estate alloys (5 of them - no space-saver nonsense) in pretty good condition. It also comes with a set of 5 Sigma saloon alloys (see photo of one against the front wheel) which are also in pretty good nick. They have a sporty appearance if you prefer that look. Alternatively, they could be used for a set of winter tyres. All alloys do of course have some corrosion at this age and a refurb would bring them up to mint again. All 4 tyres on the car have good tread.
The silver-grey paintwork is good. There are a couple of scrapes on the front bumper corners (see photos) and a couple of small faded patches on the bonnet, but otherwise just minor blemishes here and there. This is not a car where rust is encroaching around wheel arches etc. It is also solid underneath. I had a good look myself recently whilst it was up on the ramps, having had the front flex-pipe on the exhaust replaced. There is a little surface rust on the front passenger door frame, strangely. A simple sand-down and spray repair if you felt it worthwhile. Also a little surface rust from small scratches on the o/s/f wing. Again, an easy repair if desired.
It comes with all the standard Sigma Estate equipment: V6 3-litre SOHC 12 valve engine, ABS, Tailgate air-deflector with high mounted brake light, tinted windows (green), electric windows (all 4) and door mirrors (also heated), central locking, side impact door beams (pre-dates air bags), height adjustable front seat belts, 60/40 split folding rear seats, Sigma carpets (green) throughout (in good condition), luggage cover, cruise control, stereo radio cassette with 6 speakers (2 in the roof at the back to prevent muffling from a full load), CD multi-changer (loads 6 discs max) and roof rails.
This one also comes with the following optional extras: 4-speed dual mode automatic transmission. The modes are Eco and Power, with the additional function of switching the overdrive off, at which point, hold onto your seat. It flies. It also has the full leather interior option, in grey. The seats are in good condition - some wear on the front seats where you slide in and out, but no tears or holes. My father had a tow bar and full electrics fitted, all in place. I have towed a caravan with this car. Effortless.
So, other than minor blemishes on the paintwork, what are the quirks? After 21 years it has a few:
The auto choke has not worked for years, so when starting from cold (it always fires first time), you need to keep the revs up, otherwise it conks out. Once it is warm this is not a problem.
Again, when cold, the auto box can be clunky engaging gear, especially reverse. This was the case when my father bought it in 2003 and he had the box looked at / gear oil changed etc. No fault was found and frankly we have ignored it for 12 years, without any noticeable deterioration. Again, once warm, its not an issue.
The climate control only appears to work on "Auto" setting, which again is no great issue.
The electric aerial is off my old Mitsubishi Sapporo (now sadly in the Great Car Park in the sky) and not quite right for this car, but it goes up and down and provides more dubious disc jockeys to listen to.
The roof-lining is saggy in places, and has one tear (see photo). This is entirely my fault after loading the car sky high with garden refuse for the tip - tree branches crammed in have caused it. Lesson learned.
The boot lid trim panel is off - could do with some new clips to hold it in place. The boot lid itself opens fine, but on an upward slope, the pistons struggle to hold it up.
The MOT includes a number of "advisories" (see photo).
Additional Information:
The boot space is enormous. I have moved house with this car. Original service booklet shows Mitsubishi dealer stamps up to 100,309 miles.Cambelt was changed at 54,000 miles. Due for a new one. My garage quoted me £76.12 for a cam belt kit and £68.43 for water pump, + Labour.Parts are still obtainable. The exhaust (new front down-pipe) and rear silencer have been replaced thanks to eBay. New rear discs and pads were fitted last year.
And finally:
The car is in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire. Buyer collects. This auction is to sell the car for my father. There is no reserve.
Best of luck.
Ashley
