It was the first Rolls-Royce to use a monocoque chassis, a response to concerns that the company was falling behind in automotive innovation. To date, the Silver Shadow has the largest production volume of any Rolls-Royce and had a book price of £6,557 in the first year of production.
The design was a major departure from its predecessor, the Silver Cloud; although several styling cues from the Silver Cloud were modified and preserved, as the automobile had sold well. The original Shadow was 89mm narrower and 18mm shorter than the car it replaced, but nevertheless managed to offer increased passenger and luggage space thanks to more efficient packaging made possible by monocoque construction.
Aside from a more modern appearance and construction, the Silver Shadow introduced many new features such as disc brakes and independent rear suspension,
The pre 1970 Shadow 1 featured a 172 bhp 6.2 Litre V8 coupled to the same 4-speed automatic gearbox as the Silver Cloud sourced from General Motors. The car"s most innovative feature was a high-pressure hydraulic system licensed from Citroën, with dual-circuit braking and hydraulic self-levelling suspension. At first, both the front and rear of the car were controlled by the levelling system; the front levelling was deleted in 1969 as it had been determined that the rear levelling did almost all the work. Rolls-Royce achieved a high degree of ride quality with this arrangement.
First registered February 1968 (F Reg) this Shadow 1 has just come to us in absolutely beautiful condition. We understand that the last owner has in the past three expended close to £20,000 principally with Royce Motors of Betchworth keeping this car in as close to perfect as is possible.
