A rare chance to buy this lovely, 3-owner from new and low mileage Rover 420GSi Tourer (R8). First registered in May 1996, this 420GSi is fitted with the reliable and very capable 2.0ltr, 136bhp T-Series engine. These 400 Tourers are a very rare sight on the roads today. They are certainly practical, modern classics and this one would suit either a Rover enthusiast or someone who just wants to drive something that is a bit different.
As you would expect from a low mileage and well maintained car, this Rover 420GSi is mechanically spot on. The car starts and runs completely without fault – it is responsive and fun to drive. The 5-speed, manual gearbox functions exactly as it should. With the exception of the electric mirrors, all systems and electrics do everything they did, in the way they did it when new in 1996.
Turning to the overall condition of this Rover Tourer, it wears its 21 years extremely well. The car does have the odd and minor age related mark, most noteworthy being a small patch of surface corrosion to the driver’s side front wheel arch and surface corrosion to the passenger’s side rear sill. Having said this, the Metallic ‘Charcoal’ Grey paintwork is very good, all panels are very straight and, as you can see from the photographs, the car looks great. The interior is also very good, with very few signs of wear. Whilst the headlining has dropped a bit, the seats, carpets, doorcards, dashboard and controls look very fresh. This is one of the best surviving Rover 420GSi Tourers out there.
In 2004 this car was the subject of an insurance claim and is on the insurance register. I have made enquiries with the previous owner; however, I did not receive a response. Given the car’s low market value in 2004 it would have only taken a small amount of damage to result in the car being added to the insurance register and, given the lovely condition of the car today with no obvious signs of accident repair, this insurance record is a distant memory. Please do not let this put you off what is a lovely car. A full HPI Report is with the car’s history file.
So, here we have my enthusiast owned, great condition Rover 420GSi Tourer, sold with 7mths MOT and the peace of mind that comes with low mileage and good history. I have used this car throughout the winter and it has proven reliable, running without any fault for this whole time. It has been a joy to drive and to own.
I am a MG / Rover enthusiast, and have a modest collection of modern classics. I took this car to the Thornfalcon Classic Car Meet in 2016, where it attracted much interest given it is one of less than thirty-five 420GSi Tourers left on UK roads. I am only considering selling the car because I have too many other vehicles and this car will not be used for the foreseeable future… it seems a waste. Should I not be offered what I think the car is worth then I will return it to the barn, undercover for future use.
