vehicle description:

To save any misunderstandings, please ensure that you read and fully understand all of the following before bidding!
As part of my business I source used cars for my customers. A couple of months ago I was contacted by a client who wanted me to find him a good used manual gearbox Volvo XC70 diesel. After a few weeks searching I found a beautiful 2 owner car with great service history, with the current owner having purchased it from Arnold Clark at 20,000 miles when it was just over 1 year old (it had been traded into a main VW dealer against a new Tiguan)
On collecting the car I discovered that the previous owner had gone to the effort and expense of having the car MOT’d prior to trading the car into the VW dealer, which it had passed with no advisories. The car really is in stunning condition for its age. Other than a couple of very minor bumper corner scuffs, the exterior of the car is in beautiful condition with hardly even a stone chip or minor scratch. The interior is also in top class condition for the age and miles, with the driver seat bolster showing only the slightest wear. All carpets have been covered since new by full floor Volvo rubber mats and are unworn.
On driving the car, there were absolutely no knocks, clunks, suspension creaks, drivetrain looseness, brake or steering pulls. There was a slight wheel bearing noise from the left front, however I’ve just had this replaced along with the front brake discs and pads as they were a little bit pitted. The engine is smoke, leak and rattle free and sounds exactly as it should, as does the gearbox and drivetrain.
However this is where the “story” starts. After fitting the wheel bearing and new brakes (and also giving the car a full mechanical check over…which it passed with flying colours), my mechanic road tested the car himself. Unlike myself, he’s very experienced working on Volvo’s and knows them pretty well. He reported back that the car felt a bit sluggish compared to another similar car he had in for some repairs.
On looking through the documents I had received with the car I found the previous owners details and decided to give him a call. He turned out to be an absolute gentleman, and he told me that he had been having a few recent issues with the car feeling sluggish, and that the car had gone into limp mode a couple of times within the past year (but that this was immediately cleared by stopping and restarting the engine) Otherwise he gave the car a glowing report over the years he had owned it. He told me that he had cherished the car and it had wanted for absolutely nothing in the years he had owned it. If it needed serviced, it got serviced….if it required any kind of repair, it was repaired. He agreed to send me a comprehensive file of repair invoices showing the maintenance history of the car (which he did).
He also told me that the majority of miles had been covered travelling from his home in the North of Scotland to Shrewsbury area, and on numerous long distance trips through Europe to Sweden where he has family.
Please bear in mind that the symptoms are not immediately noticeable unless you’re familiar with how the car should perform. It felt fine to me, and the previous owner drove the car for a year whilst the issue existed. My own mechanic has re-checked everything (and more), and his own diagnosis based on seeing the same kind of issue in the past is that the fault may lie with the electronic turbo actuator….or very worst case scenario the turbo itself, although he does not see, feel or hear anything specifically wrong with the turbo.
Due to the above “complications” my own customer has lost confidence in the car and has decided he doesn’t now wish to take it. Due to his decision I’ve decided to list it on eBay in the hope that someone who knows about Volvo’s can benefit from owning (or fixing and selling) this stunning and very well maintained XC70.
The service history shows services at 20k, 36k, 47k, 60k, 77k (with timing belt), 91k, 109k, 126k, 139k (30th June 2016). Services are a mix of Volvo main agent and his local Volvo specialist garage.
Outside of the normal servicing and repairs invoices, maintenance highlights are (£ shows the receipts value). This demonstrates clearly that if this car needed anything at all, then it got it!
Mot’d until July 2017
4 almost new Michelin tyres
Brand new front discs and pads
Serviced 3 months ago
5 new glow plugs at 138k miles (£485)
Swirl flaps renewed at 134k miles (£440)
Handbrake cables and rear brakes completely renewed at 130k miles (£520)
New Intercooler, new Air Conditioning condenser, new rear shock absorbers at 126k miles (£2300)
New Airflow Mass Meter at 120k miles (£400)
Brand new Gearbox, Dual Mass Flywheel and clutch renewed at 95k miles (£4660)
Witter Towbar fitted at 95k miles.
In summary: In this condition, and with this kind of history, with a manual gearbox this is easily a £5000+ car.
I honestly don’t have the time or inclination to spend time and energy investigating the issue, fixing it, then selling the car on. My mechanics opinion is that this is one of the best XC70 D5’s he’s seen at this age. As such, someone who knows more than me about Volvo’s is going to get a cracking car for bargain money.
Please bear in mind that the car drives extremely well, and there are currently no engine management lights on or Volvo warning messages. You could jump in this car and drive it for as many miles as you like without issue (Other than it being slightly down in power).
If you have any questions at all or want more information or to see more photos, please give me a call on 07920 096697, or drop me an email to gg01@btinternet.com. If you"re interested, please call for a chat. I"m really not into exchanging unending text messages!
Thanks, Greg
