I"ve been a member of club Lotus for 25 yrs and long admired the handling but regretted the reliability. This is the 2nd ~Excel that I"ve modified ( the first one was written off by a drunk in a Volvo) and I decided to do the same again. Everything on this car has been rebuilt and renewed or reconditioned. The engine is a Rover/Buick V8 3.9 that was one of the last blocks of the production line. It has a Typhoon high lift cam, anti-bounce lifters, Cloyes timing chain assembly, big valve (leadless petrol seats) and ported head, Offenhauser 360 manifold, Holly carburettor, custom made stainless steel extractor manifolds and exhaust system, Mallory distributor and high energy ignition system, high pressure oil pump and a twin fan radiator. The engine sits in a custom built cradle that links to the Lotus chassis mounts (I have a photo but ran out of space in the ad.) Gearbox is the T5 unit that is fitted to TVRs and Cosworths and has had a £400 pound rebuild. Propshaft is TVR/ Jaguar. The differential is from a Jag XJS (so you can get 22mpg, the same as the Lotus engine did.) Half shafts are custom made Spicer sliding units. The suspension has had all new bushes and bearings and all the steel components have been galvanised (as have the rear seat belt mounting plates) to match the galvanised Lotus chassis. Brake pipes are stainless steel and all copper lines are new. The wheels, hubs and brakes are the type used on the Lotus Esprit V8 (Brembo calipers,) Tyres are unused Interior is all black leather with Cobra seats, Momo steering wheel and gear knob (I have the Lotus original if preferred) Speedo is electronic and takes pulses from the front offside wheel. I.C.E is 1kw 11 speaker system with a motorised flip front head unit. The bodywork has been modified as can be seen and the doors, bonnet and boot have had the edges re-glassed so that there is a 5mm shut line (something that Lotus have only just been able to achieve.) Door beams are new galvanised units. Headlights are xenon discharge type. Windscreen is new. Personalised plate comes with the car. The only problem with the car is that someone decided to "key" it and the back panel and nose had to be re-painted. Unfortunately the paint on the rear below the boot lid did not take properly and has blistered and the nose needs more cutting in. This car has been a long 6 year project with little use during this time. Unfortunately redundancy and a house move mean that it has to be sold before I have had time to work on the paint issues. As with all these projects many thousands have been spent and if I stripped the car and sold the parts at their current second hand value, I could raise £4,000+.
