As with most of the MX5"s at some point the rear sills will need attention this is due to rain channels getting blocked hence moisture works its way through and rots out the sills from the inside out. (never believe people who say its just a bit of surface rust). It is imperative to have these repaired as early as possible so as to not have the extra cost of the middle sills replaced which makes up seatbelt anchorage and jacking. The cheap and I must say bodged up repair offered my so many garages and seen on so many MX5"s is to weld a patch over the top, all this does is locks the rust in and you end up a couple of years later with either the prospect of scrapping your prized MX5 or forking out lots of hard earned money trying to save the car and having all the layers 5 in total if you include the side wall and as rust does not care which direction it goes most likely the added expense of wheel arches.
We offer a professional sill replacement service where we cut out the affected sills and replace with an in house cusom made sill to fit perfectly the area removed then finished back to the correct texture and finish and will look original.
How we do it:
Firstly we cut out the whole outer body sill Next we clean down the 1st middle sill which is directly behind the outer Next if the 1st middle sill is ok we apply an anti corrosion primer then paint the whole area so as to seal better than what was done from new. Next we make up by hand a new outer sill panel custom made by hand to exactly fit the are removed. Then we apply to the inside of the newly formed sill ant corrosion primer the paint. Next we weld the new sill into place taking time not to distort the joins. We then skim over all the weld so no weld is visible and prep (on Mk1"s up to the indent line on Mk2 & Mk2.5"s up to the lower line)to take new paint Next we move onto painting. Firstly we add texture of stone guard or stone chip depending on which texture your car has (this texture was added by Mazda) Secondly we add a primer to ready for the paint Next we paint back to the original paint code as stated on the car Finally we lacquer the whole area Next you pick up your pride and joy all properly repaired and painted As rust differs from car to car prices are as a guide only for accurate costs pop in with the car for a free quotation we also offer a FREE WHOLE CAR HEALTH CHECK.
