Driving.
The car has
very precise steering with feedback you do not get on normal cars.
The gears
all select as they should
The clutch
bites nice and low in its travel
Acceleration
is a real event, the figures are impressive but the delivery is even more
exciting than these suggest. The exhaust is standard but still provides a very
deep rumble that few cars could match. This changes to a race car sound if the revs are taken further up the
range.
Due to the
large amount of torque the car is very swift in any gear making country roads a
pleasure. There is little need to for
gear changes unless you wish.
The car
would make a very good tourer due to the comfort, large boot, power steering
and aircon. Spirited use of the throttle changes the character and they are
popular track cars.
Condition.
The car is hand
crafted and built in 1996 (not used until 2001). It is therefore different to a
new Mercedes. Having said this, it is
clear the car has spent its life garaged and covered limited miles.
Chimaeras
look more impressive in the flesh; photos do not seem to capture the sleek
curves well. The car is really eye
catching and gains a lot of attention. Especially due to the colour which
really suits the car. In lower light levels it looks Purple and in bright light
it takes on a red tone.
The
paintwork is very good. There are some very minor stone chips which have been
touched in but you would need to inspect closely to find these. There is no
damage or crazing.
The hood is
new so looks very smart.
Items that require attention.
The car was
taken for its MOT (no advisories) ready for sale but has developed a
misfire. I suspect this is down to
inactivity. It did run beautifully last
year.
Plug leads
have been changed by the MOT station so it’s not those. I do not believe it is
fuel related as the near side manifold / cat gets hot when up to temperature
which I’d guess means unburnt fuel. This
maybe a simple fix for an experienced home mechanic or could be more involved.
I was advised it needs checking with a diagnostic tool, the MOT station seemed
to think worse case could be a hydraulic lifter has stuck. They were only a
local MOT station so I did not ask them to investigate further.
I would not
recommend the car is driven away, better to take home or to an appropriate
workshop. There are lots of companies on ebay who will transport classic cars
for little cost so suggest if you do not have a trailer to use one of these.
The car can
be heard running and short test drive if needed. It starts fine and maintains
water and oil temperature correctly.
If you
intend to use the car for track days it would probably be worth fitting new coil
overs simply to get the best from the chassis. They seem fine for road use
though despite being original..
If you
wanted to use the car for shows a new carpet set would be a consideration. As
you can see from the photos the interior is nice but there is some fading in
places. A new carpet set is around £400
Since being
stored for the winter there is a small oil drip dropping onto the manifold.
Appears to be where the power steering hose fits to the pump. The clip wasn’t
tight but trimming back the hose or replacing should resolve. There has been no
oil dripping on the floor so only minor but smokes where it lands on the hot
manifold.
The air-con
pressure is now low due to inactivity so will require topping up. The pump has
stopped engaging as it has a pressure sensor.
I would
recommend a good service is done.
Value
If the jobs
above are sorted this car would be worth in the region of £16-20k due to the
history, low mileage (not seen one lower) and rare spec – HC model with power
steering and air-con.
Due to the
rise in values of classic performance cars, the value that early TVR’s now
command, the looks, performance and simple mechanicals I firmly believe these
are now at the point where prices will increase significantly. Interest will escalate with the new TVR due
out soon also.
The
purchaser of this car can have confidence in a good investment as well as a
practical and affordable supercar.
Club support
is excellent, including a good forum, regular events /meets and European tours.
I am selling
as I require the garage space for my daily drive and since my son has become
involved in mountain biking this will be taking up what free time I have.
